Unfortunately, due to the new UK visa system Famoudou Konate will not be able to travel to Scotland this year. He would need to have a new biometric passport taking several weeks to be issued. To get the new passport he would have to send in the old one. However, being on the road all summer he constantly needs to have his passport at hand. This year, there was simply no time he could do without it. Sometimes we wonder why such individuals as Famoudou Konate, whom one could easily call 'Walking Cultural Heritage of the World' require visa at all. He should just get some kind of diplomatic passport, shouldn't he!
We are sorry to say that the Japanese tour announced earlier had to be cancelled due to schedule difficulties.
We are very much looking forward to this year's Bamberg workshops. Both classes are fully booked. Folks are coming from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Die Workshops finden vom 17. bis 21. September statt und sind in zwei Phasen unterteilt. Der erste Workshop vom Mittwoch dem 17. bis Freitag den 19. September beinhaltet nur die Kurse von Famoudou Konaté, während am Wochenende vom 20. und 21. September zusätzlich die Workshops von Ibro, Diarra, Billy Konaté und der Tänzerin Hadja Sire Doumbouya stattfinden. Alle Teilnehmer, die an allen 5 Tagen mit Famodou arbeiten, erhalten einen Rabatt von 10 Euro.

Famoudou wurde 1940 in Sangbarala, einem Dorf in der Hamana-Region (Oberguinea) geboren. Dieses Gebiet befindet sich im Herzen der Malinké-Länder und wird als Heimat der Dununba-Rhythmen angesehen. Schon mit 8 Jahren widmete sich Famoudou intensiv der Perkussion und war in der ganzen Gegend für seine Künste bekannt. In den Jahren von 1959 bis 1985 bereiste er als erster Solist des guineischen Nationalballetts „Les Ballets Africains de la République de Guinée“ die ganze Welt. Während dieser Zeit schuf Famoudou viele Arrangements traditioneller Rhythmen und Gesänge seiner Heimat, welche zukünftige Musikergenerationen stark beeinflussten. Seit 1986 unterrichtet Famoudou Konaté kontinuierlich in Europa, Japan, Israel, Nordamerika und auch seiner Heimat Westafrika. Infolgedessen bildeten sich viele nicht-afrikanische Perkussionisten in den westafrikanischen Musiktraditionen aus und erlangten außergewöhnliche Spielfertigkeiten und Wissen um westafrikanische Kulturen. 1996 erhielt Famoudou Konaté eine Ehrenprofessur an der Berliner Universität der Künste, welche er bis heute innehat.
Der Meistertrommler Ibro Konaté, Sohn Famoudou Konatés, kommt aus einer der berühmtesten Künstlerfamilien Guineas. Ibro Konaté ist mit der Djembékultur der Malinké aufgewachsen und hat sich ihr mit ganzem Herzen verschrieben. In Guinea spielte er jahrelang in verschiedenen bekannten Ensembles sowie als Solo-Künstler auf kleinen und großen Veranstaltungen. Seit 1989 bereist Ibro Europa, gibt Workshops und Konzerte und hat mit seinem mitreißenden Djembéspiel viele Freunde gefunden. Heute gehört er weltweit zu den bekanntesten Djembéfola. Viele der heute praktizierenden Djembélehrer in Europa und den USA zählen zu Ibros Schülern und haben ihn oft in Guinea besucht. Im Januar 2005 hat Ibro seinen Wohnsitz nach Oldenburg verlegt und bietet nun selbst regelmäßige Kurse, sowie Workshops in ganz Deutschland an. Des weiteren gibt er Ferienworkshops in Afrika und benachbarten europäischen Ländern.

Dort konnte sie weiter ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrung fördern und sie behauptetesich auf artistischem Niveau innerhalb einiger Ensembles wie "Les Mereveilles de Guinée" und "Le Ballet de Matam". Während dieser Zeit lernte Hadja auch verschiedene Tanzstilistiken von anderen Ethnien. Im Jahr 1992 verließ sie das Ballett aufgrund der Begegnung mit der Familie von Famoudou Konaté. Sie entschied sich somit für die traditionelle Musik und Tanz. Die Mitgliedschaft in der Band von Billy Konaté verschaffte ihr zudem die Gelegenheit, verschiedene Perkussionsinstrumente spielen zu lernen und sie nutzte die Möglichkeit, ihr eigenes musikalisches Wissen auf den Tanz zu übertragen. Hadja lebt seit mehr als zehn Jahren in Deutschland und organisiert und leitet europaweit afrikanische Tanzworkshops.

the latest updates regarding Famoudou Konaté's Southern German tour: This October 11 and October 12 Famoudou Konaté will be teaching at two newly added workshops at Ellwangen, a small town in the southwestern Part of Germany. Please allow me to quote the organizer's original German information:
Djembé für Fortgeschrittene mit Famoudou Konaté
Beide Kurse richten sich an fortgeschrittene Djembéspieler/innen. Einschlägige Erfahrungen mit so genannten ternären Rhythmen (auch 12/8- oder 6er-Rhythmen genannt) und dem Solieren auf der Djembé sollen vorhanden sein.Termine:

It is with great sadness that we tell you of the loss of our dear friend Rainer Dörrer. Rainer has been a dear and beloved friend of Famoudou's for more than 25 years. Years ago, Rainer was on a quest to find a drum teacher and found Famoudou, in Guinea, during his days in the ballet. Rainer later was part of a group who invited Famoudou to travel to Germany marking his first voyage as a solo artist. In 1987, Rainer organized a workshop to bring students to Famoudou's homeland to experience the culture first hand. He continued these workshops for 20 years enhancing the lives of both the students, from many countries, and the Africans they met. Rainer was loved and highly regarded by many people all over the world. He was a kind, gentle, humble, compassonate person with a great sense of humor and adventure. He will remain in our hearts always and we will think of him fondly playing his drum. There are no words that can express all that we have lost with his passing, he will be greatly missed.
